Former Blue Jays reliever Swanson retires

Erik Swanson’s big league career is at an end.
The former Toronto Blue Jays reliever announced his retirement on Thursday.
A native of Fargo, ND, the 32-year-old Swanson spent seven years in the majors with the Blue Jays and Seattle Mariners.
“This game took me to places I don’t think I could have ever guessed I’d be,” Swanson wrote. “It gave me cities to call home and people to call family. It’s incredible how many relationships this game has brought into my life. From lifelong friends up in Toronto and Winnipeg, to friends in big cities like Seattle and small towns like Hickory, NC, and all the other little stops In between. It’s pretty amazing how a simple game can bring so many amazing people into your world. My time in this game was nothing short of amazing. Thank you to everyone who helped me along the way and to all those who supported me. You all have truly made this journey an unforgettable 12 years.”
Originally taken in the eighth round of the 2014 MLB Amateur Draft by the Texas Rangers, Swanson made his big league debut with the M’s in 2019. After four seasons in Seattle, he was traded to the Blue Jays ahead of the 2023 season in a deal that saw outfielder Teoscar Hernandez go the other way.
Swanson was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays last June and released when he cleared waivers.
Swanson finishes his career with a record of 11-16 in 246 appearances with an earned run average of .420 and a 1.143 WHIP.
