Manchester United vs Bournemouth preview

Bournemouth have enjoyed their pre-Christmas trips to Manchester United in the past two seasons, winning 3-0 at Old Trafford in December 2023 and repeating that scoreline in December 2024.

Despite being winless in six Premier League matches, Andoni Iraola’s Cherries are a tempting bet to complete a hat-trick of midwinter away victories at inconsistent United.

Bournemouth were shut out in their last two home games, losing 1-0 to in-form Everton before a goalless stalemate against Chelsea.

But their away fixtures have been full of goalmouth entertainment, starting with a 4-2 opening-night defeat at Liverpool, and they appeal with the draw no bet at Old Trafford.

The Cherries were great value for their 1-0 win at Tottenham on August 31 and let slip 2-0 leads to draw 3-3 at Crystal Palace and lose 3-2 at Sunderland.

Their defence remains a concern but they have the intensity in midfield and the attacking quality to rattle Ruben Amorim’s Red Devils.

United won 4-1 at bottom club Wolves last Monday but their most recent home results were a 1-0 defeat to Everton, who had Idrissa Gueye sent off in the 13th minute, and a 1-1 draw with struggling West Ham. Their only clean sheet in 16 matches this season came in October’s 2-0 home win over Sunderland.

Amorim admitted on Friday that he was still unsure whether Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui would be available to face Bournemouth before heading to the Africa Cup of Nations.

That uncertainty may well have disrupted United’s preparation for a tricky fixture and, despite occasional glimpses of promise, they are hard to trust at short odds.

Bournemouth had some great away results in the second half of last season, winning 4-1 at Newcastle, 2-0 at Everton and 2-1 at Arsenal, and their lean run could come to an end at Old Trafford.

Casemiro could get shooting opportunities against Cherries

United midfielder Casemiro has scored in three of his last ten Premier League matches, against Chelsea, Brighton and Nottingham Forest, and he should be backed to have at least two shots.

The Brazil international had four shots at Forest on November 1 and three attempts at goal in United’s 2-1 win at Crystal Palace and the 1-1 draw with West Ham.

Take Tavernier to strike an early blow at Old Trafford

Bournemouth’s Marcus Tavernier has also been firing in plenty of shots and he is worth a bet to open the scoring, as he did in the Cherries’ wins over Wolves and Forest this season.

Tavernier should start in an advanced role at Old Trafford and he converted Bournemouth’s most recent penalty in the 2-2 draw against West Ham.

Over 2.5 goals

Bournemouth drew 0-0 at home to Chelsea in their last Premier League match but their away fixtures average 4.29 goals per game this season.

Marcus Tavernier to have two or more shots

Tavernier played in a deeper midfield role for the Cherries against Chelsea but still had three shots, taking his tally to 17 attempts at goal in his last six league starts.

Second half to have most goals

Bournemouth have conceded 15 of their 24 league goals after the break and seven of Manchester United’s last eight games featured more goals in the second half than the first.
