The rivalry shared between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Golden State Warriors, one of the most captivating and rich competitions in the NBA. Blended with eras of dominance, star power, on and off-court drama, the matchup between the Lakers and the Warriors has evolved from early legends such as Magic Johnson and Tim Hardaway to modern-day greats, LeBron James and Stephen Curry.
Both teams will lock horns in the NBA 2025-26 season opener, and are eyeing kicking off their campaign with an upper hand and an early dominance. As the Los Angeles Lakers gear up to host the Warriors at home on October 21, let’s dive into the history of their rivalry, head-to-head records, key moments, and more.
Origin of the Rivalry Between Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors
The roots of the Lakers-Warriors rivalry traces back to the era of their origin. The Warriors originated as the Philadelphia Warriors in the early days of the league, while the Los Angeles Lakers were in Minneapolis before both teams relocated westward. The Lakers shifted to Los Angeles in 1960 and the Warriors shifted to San Francisco Bay Area in 1962 before adapting Golden State in their name.
The early seasons (1960s and 1970s) featured icons such as Wilt Chamberlain and Jerry West for the Lakers and Rick Barry for the Dubs. In 1973, both teams locked horns in the Western Conference Finals, where the Lakers triumphed 4-1 en route to the NBA Finals.
The 1980s and 1990s were the decades of the Showtime Lakers with icons such as Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. On the other hand, the Warriors, after a few early disappointing seasons, began their rebuild with stars such as Tim Hardaway, Chris Mullin, and more. Both teams went on to lock horns in 1987 Playoffs, and once again, the Lakers won the series handily in a 4-1 victory.
In the following decade, the Lakers started to lose their charm, owing to the Michael Jordan-led Chicago Bulls. The Warriors, on the other hand, still managed to float and emerge as contenders, especially after signing names such as Chris Webber and Latrell Sprewell. The Lakers sought to rebuild themselves in the second half of the decade with names such as Shaquille O’Neal and acquiring draft rights to future hall-of-famer Kobe Bryant.
What followed after for the Warriors was not short of a nightmare. Golden State collapsed in their pursuit to stay competitive and they ended up frequently rotating coaches, until 2006, when they were finally able to post a winning season. In the 2010s, the Warriors entered an era of shift under Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Kevin Durant. They made regular playoffs appearances and won four championships from 2015 to 2022.
Los Angeles Lakers vs Golden State Warriors- Regular Season Head to Head Record
The Los Angeles Lakers and Golden State Warriors have been up against each other in a total of 442 regular-season games in the history of the franchises. Out of those 442 contests, the Lakers emerged victorious 265 times, making up for winning percentage of 0.600 and the Warriors clinched victory 177 times, for 0.400%.
During the 2024-25 regular season, both teams engaged in four clashes, where Los Angeles dominated its counterparts 3-1.
As the Minneapolis Lakers and Philadelphia Warriors, they have locked horns in 91 games, where the Lakers won 51 times while the Warriors won 40 games. In their first ever game, played on November 28, 1947, the Lakers handed an 88-67 defeat to their rivals.
Los Angeles Lakers vs Golden State Warriors- Postseason Head to Head Record
Talking about their playoff fixtures, they have played 41 games in the playoffs with 28 victories for the Lakers and 13 for the Warriors. The last time they faced each other in the postseason was in the 2023 Western Conference Semifinals, where the gold and purple won the series 4-2.
Their first meeting during the postseason dates back to the 1967 West Division Semifinals, where the Warriors swept the Lakers in a three-game series.
